Overview

What changes when you pay, and the traps that catch everyone in their first week.

When to use this

Before you commit, or the first time you hit a limit mid task.

Who it is for: Anyone deciding whether Claude is worth a subscription.

Step by step

  1. 1Work on the free plan until you hit a limit that actually interrupts you.
  2. 2Check the current plans and prices on Anthropic's own pricing page, since they change.
  3. 3If Claude Code or long file work is the reason you are here, you need a paid plan.
  4. 4Start a new thread for a new topic rather than one enormous thread, which burns through a limit faster.

Free versus paid

What the free plan is for

Deciding whether this is for you. You can hold a real conversation, write real things, and get a proper sense of whether Claude is useful for your work. What you cannot do is run it all day.

What changes when you pay

More usage, before anything else. The limit is the thing people meet first, usually halfway through something that was going well.

Access to the heavier tools. Claude Code is the clearest example, and it is the reason most of the lessons in this Institute assume a paid plan.

Room to work in longer documents and bigger files without being cut off mid task.

Plans, prices and limits change, so this lesson does not list them. Check Anthropic's own pricing page, and compare it against what you actually ran out of.

The traps everyone hits first

One enormous thread. A thread carries its whole history every time you send a message, so the longer it gets, the more of your limit each reply costs, and the more the answers drift. Start a new thread when the topic changes.

Judging it on a bad brief. Most disappointing first weeks are a briefing problem rather than a plan problem. Do the Talking to Claude lesson before you decide the tool is not worth paying for.

Paying before you know what for. Work free until you hit a wall you can name. If the wall is usage, pay. If the wall is that answers are generic, a plan will not fix it.

Expecting it to remember you. It does not, unless you set that up. That is the Claude Memory lesson, and it changes more than upgrading does.

Checkpoint

You have done this module when you can say in one sentence what made you hit a limit, or why you have not hit one yet.

Check Your Understanding

Progress is saved when signed in.

1. Why does one enormous thread cost you more?
2. The answers feel generic. Will upgrading fix that?
3. When is the right time to pay?

Quality check

  • Check every fact, figure, and quote against a real source.
  • Review the finished work before using or sharing it.
  • Remove confidential information that is not needed.

Privacy and safety

Do not include customer records, contracts, credentials, employee information, or confidential material without approval. A qualified person should review decisions involving people, money, health, or legal obligations.

Worth knowing

Do not judge the tool on your first free afternoon. Judge it on one real task, briefed properly.

Where this goes wrong

Running everything in one endless thread. The longer the thread, the more it costs you in limits, and the more it drifts.
